Sciatic Pain Research

[Potential Positive effect]

Sciatica is one of the most frequently reported complaints affecting quality of life and reducing social and economic efficiency. Sciatica is a syndrome rather than a specific diagnosis. In 90% of cases, sciatica is caused by a herniated disc with nerve-root compression. The prevalence ranges from 1.2% to 43%.

Acupuncture for Sciatica

A number of risk factors are thought to be associated with first-time incidence of sciatica and influence the development of sciatica; these include smoking, obesity, occupational factors, health status, age and gender.

According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), sciatica belongs to the gallbladder meridian of the foot-Shaoyang (GB) and the bladder meridian of the foot-Taiyang (BL), and the Yanglingquan (GB 34) and Huantiao (GB 30) are two key “acupuncture points” (acupoints) for treating sciatica.

Pooled analysis of nine studies with 780 patients in the acupuncture group and 771 in the medication group revealed that acupuncture was significantly more effective than conventional medication.
