Acupuncture for Morning Sickness

Acupuncture may assist in alleviating morning sickness through the regulation of the digestive system, the reduction of stress, and the balancing of hormones. It operates by stimulating particular acupuncture points, which can affect the body’s reaction to nausea and vomiting. Certain studies indicate that acupuncture is effective in managing both nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, even in severe instances.

A recent meta-analysis conducted in 2024 [1], which reviewed 24 randomized controlled clinical trials involving 2390 women, revealed that the combination of medication and acupuncture is more effective in managing morning sickness symptoms compared to medication alone. Additionally, other research [2], has indicated that acupuncture by itself can also aid in alleviating these symptoms.

Regulating the digestive system

Acupuncture has the potential to decrease the secretion of stomach acid and facilitate quicker stomach emptying, thereby alleviating digestive discomfort and minimizing feelings of nausea.

Reducing stress and anxiety

Acupuncture promotes the secretion of endorphins, which may induce a soothing effect and assist in controlling stress and anxiety, both of which can exacerbate morning sickness.

Acupuncture for Back Pain during Pregnancy

During pregnancy, hormonal changes lead to the relaxation and stretching of ligaments throughout the body, particularly in the lower back and pelvis, in preparation for labor. These alterations can result in misalignment of the joints, which may contribute to the experience of backache.

Additionally, the weight of the developing fetus can exert a forward pull on the spine, exacerbating back pain.

Pregnant individuals often find that back pain intensifies at night, potentially disrupting their sleep. Back pain during pregnancy is prevalent, affecting an estimated 50 to 80 percent of expectant mothers. The pain can vary from mild discomfort linked to specific activities to severe pain that may become chronic. In approximately 10 percent of cases, the pain can become so intense that it hampers the ability to work or perform daily tasks during pregnancy.

Research indicates that lower back pain typically manifests between the fifth and seventh months of pregnancy, although it can occasionally begin as early as eight to twelve weeks. Women with a history of lower back issues are at an increased risk for experiencing back pain, which may also present earlier in their pregnancy.

We offer Acupuncture support for low back pain and sciatica during all stages of pregnancy.

Acupuncture for Induction of Labour

If you are are past your due date or wish to commence daily Acupuncture induction treatment please choose the Acupuncture (Induction of Labour) option.

Many studies have been conducted to test the efficacy of Acupuncture. An early study claimed that ‘the average time from Acupuncture induction until delivery was 13.1 hours and the success rate of Acupuncture to induce overdue labour to be between 68-83%’ (Tsuei 1974) [3].

Further research shows that Acupuncture successfully initiates the onset of labour and can prepare the uterus and cervix for labour, reduce pain of contractions, shorten the average time of labour, reduce recovery time and significantly decrease the need for medical intervention (Smith 2004, Betts 2006) [4].
